Grand Junction ‘Johns’ leave credit card trail
by Paul Shockley

At least 43 people from 14 states used their Discover credit cards to pay thousands of dollars for alleged prostitution services at a Grand Junction massage parlor over a five-year period, according to court records made public Tuesday.

While “cooperating witnesses” admitted to paying between $100 and $300 for various sex acts, including intercourse, authorities allege Fuji Oriental Massage Therapy didn’t offer any legitimate massage service costing more than $80 per hour, according to those same records.

The business sold no products.

Fuji’s owner was formally charged Tuesday with two counts of racketeering, two counts of pimping and filing a false tax return, as well as misdemeanor charges of keeping a place of prostitution, promoting sexual immorality and pandering.

According to the documents released Tuesday, the owner allegedly paid regular salaries to prostitutes. The records do not address the alleged prostitutes or whether they’re largely local women or foreign nationals.

The 43 alleged customers identified in the records all paid via the same method — Discover credit cards.

Fuji also accepted cash.

Discover charges totaled $15,712 between February 2003 and March 2008; there were several frequent customers, according to the records. One DeBeque customer visited eight times over two years, spending $1,480. Eight customers were Grand Valley residents, while most were card holders living in elsewhere, including Oregon, New York and New Orleans.

Three transactions are specified as a “person unknown to District Attorney.”

Johns “Not A Focus” in Prostitution and Pimping Investigation

New details in a pimping and prostitution investigation: 11 News has learned more about the so called “Johns” who investigators say paid hundreds of dollars for sex.

According to newly released court documents, people who paid for services at the Fuji Massage Parlor left credit card trails for investigators.

Records show there were at least 43 people from 14 different states getting services at the parlor, eight of those lived in the Grand Valley.

The Mesa County District Attorney’s office says those people may never be prosecuted.

“Going after Johns, going after people for solicitation of prostitution is not the focus of this investigation. Certainly we’re gonna review every case or a case by case basis and make our decisions as to whether or not we would file but for the most part we’re focusing on a much higher level of organization,” Deputy District Attorney Dan Rubenstein told 11 News on Wednesday.

Accused massage parlor madam made thousands, police say

The classified ad for Fuji Oriental Therapy Massage featured a picture of an attractive woman and offered services including a sauna, steam beds and a body shampoo.

But court records released Tuesday portray a seedy side of the Horizon Drive business, one that reportedly defined it during its entire 12-year existence.

Those records allege that the Fuji Massage owner and operator made tens of thousands of dollars — and potentially much more —via prostitution and used the proceeds to hire prostitutes, pay property taxes on the massage parlor building and purchase property in Colorado Springs. She also used the money to pay homeowners association dues on her Grand Junction home, where she and, often, some of the prostitutes live, according to the records.

Prosecutors on Tuesday charged her with two felony counts each of racketeering and pimping and misdemeanor counts of keeping a place of prostitution, promoting sexual immorality and pandering.

She also was charged with a felony count of filing a false tax return in 2007. Authorities say she reported $229,531 in income while her banking records show she collected at least $70,208 more.

Mesa County Chief Deputy District Attorney Dan Rubinstein said the fact she collected that much reported and unreported income in a single year is indicative of just how much prostitution was going on at Fuji Massage.

“For a roadside Asian massage parlor in Grand Junction, Colorado, we take that to be an indication that this is a large corporation that is operating with multiple businesses sheltering and hiding money and using various businesses to purchase real estate,” he said.
