Prostitutes in Greece demand brothel license

Dozens of prostitutes, most using headscarves or hoods to hide their faces, demonstrated in central Athens Wednesday, demanding working licenses for brothels across Greece.

Prostitution is legal in Greece, and sex workers have personal permits to exercise their profession. But they can only do that by walking the streets, not using brothels. As a result, many end up working illegally and facing arrest because they operate out of brothels.

“We are here to put an end to our hardship and degradation,” said Dimitra Kanellopoulou, president of Greece’s sex workers’ association, SEPE. “The situation is tragic, hypocritical and miserable.”

About 100 sex workers held a rally outside the Interior Ministry, chanting: “We will not back down until we are given justice.”

Greek cops crush voodoo prostitution ring

Greek police said Thursday they had smashed a gang that forced Nigerian women into prostitution using voodoo in the latest of a number of such cases reported in Europe.

The Athens police department said the traffickers are believed to have exploited more than 40 Nigerian women brought to Greece via Turkey in the last two years.

A 20-year-old Greek woman of Nigerian origin was arrested on suspicion of working for the network and police are seeking her husband, who is also a naturalised Greek citizen.

Police rescued five women held captive by the traffickers against a ransom of 80 000 euros (R885 369) demanded from their families.

Greece arrests policemen for sex trafficking ring

athensGreek authorities have arrested four policemen for trafficking hundreds of Eastern European women for prostitution, police said Wednesday.

“It is Greece’s biggest trafficking case in the last 15 years,” a police official said, adding that a retired police officer, who recruited the women, was also arrested.

“All five were the masterminds of the ring,” said the official, who requested anonymity.

The ring was responsible for bringing about 300 women to several night clubs in Athens over the past few months, he said.

In a separate case, Greece arrested another policeman for human trafficking and drug dealing Wednesday, the official said.

Playmates arrested on charge of prostitution

Two Playboy magazine models from Eastern Europe have been arrested in Athens on prostitution charges, police said yesterday.

The two women, whose nationalities were not disclosed, were arrested on Sunday in a central Athens hotel by an undercover police officer who paid them 1,000 euros (about $1500 US dollars) in marked bills, a police statement said.

One of the women had won a Playmate 2008 competition while her companion was runner-up, the police said without giving further details.

Aged 23 and 25, the women are believed to have been involved in an international racket which charged between 250 and 2,000 euros ($400-1500 US) from customers ”wishing to come into carnal contact with well-known models,” the police said.

The racket is believed to be based in Prague and to have a turnover of several million euros.
