No more tricks, former prostitutes tell all
Former prostitutes talk openly about how to stop other women from selling their bodies for drug money
by Karen Grace
It was far from your typical town hall meeting. Tuesday night former prostitutes packed a public meeting on the westside and openly talked about their past in order to help the future.
“I’ve done it all,” said Cynthia Wallace. She admitted to selling her body for sex in the past. “I had a very depressing background with suicide attempts and everything,” said Wallace. She also went to prison after turning herself in.
Caroline Reyes also attended the meeting and said, “I’m here because of the women that believed in me.” She added, “And I’m here to help the women that are still lost out there.”
These are just two of the women who once worked the street corners of District 5 and are now living to tell people why they used to sell their bodies for drug money. They were forethcoming about their history in the hopes of stopping this cycle.
Councilwoman Lourdes Galvan called for the town hall meeting specifically to focus on “sex workers.”
District 5 is plagued with prostitution. So far this year in San Antonio there have been 208 cases of felony and misdemeanor prostitution, and 112 of those cases are in District 5. Thats more than half!
But places like the Grace House at Lake View Baptist Church are helping them beat the odds.
