Two charged in Web prostitution sting

Punta Gorda police have arrested two people after a monthlong investigation into an Internet-based prostitution business run from a Punta Gorda Isles home.

Police said that on Friday they arrested one woman and one man for offering prostitution services at a home  on Hibiscus Drive.

Detectives launched an investigation after receiving an anonymous tip about prostitution offered online through social networking and advertising sites, including Craigslist.com, Travslist.org and Backpage.com, according to a police department news release.

Police set up a sting, calling a phone number listed in one of the advertisements, and were sent to the Hibiscus Drive home in Punta Gorda Isles.

Police said the woman allegedly agreed with an undercover officer to exchange sex for money and was arrested. The man reportedly came out from another room and was also arrested because police said he received money from prostitution sales for advertising and using his home for transactions.
