Escort Manager in Spitzer Probe Sentenced to Six Months

A woman accused of managing a prostitution ring at the center of a probe of former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer was sentenced to six months in prison.

Cecil Suwal said at her sentencing today that she was manipulated by her boss and boyfriend, Mark Brener, into managing an international prostitution ring known as Emperors Club VIP, whose clients included Spitzer. Crying, Suwal said she’s reformed since her March arrest and is now in school and committed to charity.

“The person standing before you today is not the same as the one who was deluded into engaging in criminal conduct,” Suwal told U.S. District Judge Barbara Jones in Manhattan federal court. “I do not see the world the same since my arrest.”

Suwal, 24, and Brener, 63, are among the four people who’ve pleaded guilty to charges of organizing and managing the Emperors Club. Spitzer resigned as governor in March after he was identified as a client. Prosecutors said in November that they wouldn’t prosecute him for money laundering or other crimes.

In a March 6 complaint against Brener, who was the ringleader, Suwal, and bookers Tanya Hollander and Temeka Lewis, prosecutors said Client 9, whom they didn’t identify, paid $4,300 for sex with a New York prostitute named “Kristen” at a Washington hotel in February. Front companies accepted the payments, according to the complaint. Spitzer was Client 9, the official said.

Marketing

Prosecutors said Suwal was involved in the marketing of the club to potential customers; the recruitment and training of new prostitutes; the receipt of payments; the resolution of disputes; and the distribution of proceeds. They said Suwal deserved up to 27 months in prison, as called for by federal sentencing guidelines.
