Emperors Club Operator Brener Sentenced To 30 Months In Prison
By Chad Bray
The operator of a high-end prostitution ring that counted ex-New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer as one of its clients was sentenced to more than two years in prison Friday.
At a hearing Friday, U.S. District Judge Denny Chin in Manhattan sentenced Mark Brener, the leader and organizer of the Emperors Club VIP, to 30 months in prison, to be followed by two years supervised release. He also ordered Brener pay a $5,000 fine.
“I certainly don’t believe prostitution is a victimless crime,” the judge said. “It may go on all the time. It may be the second oldest profession. It’s certainly my view a number of people are significantly hurt by this.”
Brener, 63 years old, pleaded guilty to conspiracy charges last June. Brener, who has been in custody since his arrest last March, had faced 24 months to 30 months in prison under federal sentencing guidelines.
In November, federal prosecutors opted not to bring criminal charges against Spitzer in the matter.
