Craigslist prostitution sting in Manchester, Connecticut
The Cops once again turn their attention to some ladies making a living via Craigslist. WTNH reports…
Craigslist prostitution sting
By News Channel 8’s Bob Wilson
Police round up several women suspected of being prostitutes through Craigslist.
If you need a room mate, want to buy a car or are looking for a carpenter — Craigslist has it all. And now, sex is also for sale on this site.
“Basically you can go in there almost any day and see different postings for this different behavior,” Lieutenant Chris Davis, of Manchester, said. “And, this isn’t the first time we have done it.”
Manchester detectives say it’s like want adds for prostitutes, some even list their rates right on the web site under erotic services. They go for $160 an hour, $100 for a half hour and $60 for a quickie says one add.
News Channel 8 decided to call a woman who lists her picture but not her rates to verify what she is selling.
Wilson: “It’s $225 for the hour. Wow, what does that entail?”
She says it’s all inclusive. The detectives in Manchester say that is pretty much how it works. In all, they’ve arrested five women in a prostitution sting — all advertise their services on Craigslist.
Other police departments, from New Haven to Waterbury, are also monitoring computer chat rooms. In Waterbury, they used another site to help break up a ring in massage parlors and arrested about a dozen women for prostitution.
Attorney General Richard Blumenthal has been investigating and negotiating with Craigslist to get them to put in some safe guards. But, people who use the popular web site are surprised to find prostitutes out in the open.
Wilson: “What kind of things have you seen online?”
Matthew Gooding, of Wallingford: “People looking to connect, to hook up, some of the ads are pretty out there.”
“If you have people advertising prostitution online, what is next?” Natia Ortega, of Middletown, asked.
Police already know what is next. And that is why they are working these under cover stings.
“Drugs, alcohol and violence follow prostitution activities and we want to stop that from coming into our community,” Lieutenant Davis said.
