Avon officials hope to permanently shut three ‘massage parlor’ sites
By Josh Duke
Avon leaders met with the town’s lawyer Thursday to determine if they can legally shut down three Avon massage parlors that local police say were fronts for prostitution.
Four women were arrested Tuesday on preliminary charges of misdemeanor prostitution after a six-month investigation of Chinese Star Massage, Sunny Spa and Sunshine Spa, all on U.S. 36.
Employees were arrested after police said they offered to perform sex acts on undercover detectives.
“There were rumors floating around that this might be going on, so I’m glad the police looked into it,” said Town Manager Tom Klein. “We don’t need that here. It is not in line with our values in Avon.”
Police Sgt. Jeff Lewis said police couldn’t shut down the businesses, though Chief Jack Miller confirmed Thursday that all three were temporarily closed after the arrests. Furniture was moved out of the Sunshine Spa building earlier this week, he said.
Calls to each of the businesses Thursday were not answered.
Giving more than massages in a massage parlor wouldn’t be new to Hendricks County or the Central Indiana region. About 15 years ago, several massage parlors moved just across the Marion County border into Hendricks County. A joint effort by police in both counties forced them out of business.
More recently, similar arrests have been made in Carmel, Fishers, Greenwood and Shelbyville.
