Eight arrested in raids on Asian massage parlours

OTTAWA – Three men and five women have been charged in the latest in a series of raids on Asian massage parlours in Ottawa and Gatineau.

Acting Insp. Murdock MacLeod said the eight people arrested face charges that include offering sexual favours for money and living off the avails of prostitution.

The arrests followed a September raid in Gatineau in which 17 people, all between the ages of 30 and 40, were charged with prostitution-related offences.

Among those arrested Tuesday, Yu Hua Li, 39, of Radstock Private, is alleged to be the operator of the two downtown Ottawa businesses. The others who were arrested, ranging in age from 31 to 64, were customers or employees, police said.

About $17,100 in cash was seized.

Police said they were not aware of any connection to organized crime, and also stressed it was not a case of immigrants being forced to act as sex workers.
